Britain's economy in crisis?
Event though I believe Spain is a great country for many reasons, I do believe that it has quite big weaknesses concerning employment and your preparation for it. So as much as I loved the heart warming sun and mind boggling food I decided to travel to the UK to start University. As my last year is at hand, I have the difficult decision of deciding what to do with my life, as we all do. Should I go back to Spain, should I stay in the UK or should I travel somewhere else?
I believe that working in Spain is less than favourable for someone who is eager to have a hands on experience in an enterprise without having to wait too long. I myself have worked on placement in a few Spanish companies. Only one of those experiences was more than fulfilling. In the rest of experiences I have to say that I might as well be doing something else. Graduate students in Spain are not as welcome as in other countries. The reason for this is obviously company politics. If you turn around from your tiny table you can see graduate engineers serving coffee and making photocopies for a year before they get some real work. In my opinion this is quite shameful and definitely a path not to be followed. I believe than this can even happen in very renowned consultancies such as Deloitte or Boston Consulting Group.
I have been living in the UK during my whole university degree, a placement year and three years when I was younger. Luckily I have been able to learn English and reach a fluent level. It's so the case that that I now think things first in English. I can most definitely say that I am very comfortable living here although there are still a few things that always make annoy me. Cliche or not, its horrible weather and under developed food make me want to pack up my things and run back home. But small things aside, I see the possibility of staying to work in the UK after I graduate as a very big option. From my placement I have learned that I can gain a lot of hands-on experience and develop myself within a company here. I can also say that the salaries here are considerably higher even though living costs are a bit more dear.
I have read a very disturbing article that left me quite speechless about England, its economy and what it is to come, maybe! Here is a LINK, it's very interesting so have a read but don't start leaving the country yet.
After reading this, the possibility of travelling to another coutnry is a very appealing option. But that I will discuss in another post.
